چکیده

Continuing uncertainty about the etiology of schizophrenia calls for periodic reappraisal of relevant data and conclusions, reappraisals guided by a beacon of modest doubt to avoid the distorted views of both the zealot and the skeptic. This review does not set out to cover every possible aspect of the genetics of schizophrenia. It deals with data from recent family, twin, and adoption studies of schizophrenia rather than with theoretical issues—data primarily selected because they provide grist for one or another genetically "powered" mills. The conference entitled "The Transmission of Schizophrenia," held at Dorado Beach, Puerto Rico, in 1967 (Rosenthal and Kety 1968) is our point of departure, since it was there that the first reports were given of the adoption studies carried out in Denmark by Rosenthal, Kety, Wender, Schulsinger, and their colleagues (Kety et al. 1968 and Rosenthal et al. 1968). This is not to say there was no credible evidence in favor of genetic influences in schizophrenia before the adoption studies

A review of the evidence from family, twin and adoption studies for a genetic contribution to adult psychiatric disorders.

Family, twin and adoption studies have provided major evidence for the role of genetics in numerous psychiatric disorders including obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and Alzheimer's disease. As the search for patterns of inheritance and candidate genes of these complex disorders continues, we review relevant findings from q...

Linkage analysis in psychiatric disorders: the emerging picture.

Gene finding in genetically complex diseases has been difficult as a result of many factors that have diagnostic and methodologic considerations. For bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, numerous family, twin, and adoption studies have identified a strong genetic component to these behavioral psychiatric disorders. Despite difficulties that include diagnostic differences between sample populatio...

"Is Crime in the Genes? A Critical Review of Twin and Adoption Studies of Criminal and Antisocial Behavior"

In this chapter I focus on twin and adoption studies of “criminal,” “antisocial,” and “psychopathic” behavior as examples of how genetic research is used in the study of human behavioral differences. 2 Topics beyond the scope of this chapter include the “XYY” controversy of the 1960s and 1970s, and molecular genetic research. Suffice it to say that, apart from claims made about Brunner and coll...

Family, twin, and adoption studies of bipolar disorder.

Family, twin, and adoption studies have been essential in defining the genetic epidemiology of bipolar disorder over the past several decades. Family studies have documented that first-degree relatives of affected individuals have an excess risk of the disorder, while twin studies (and to a lesser extent, adoption studies) suggest that genes are largely responsible for this familial aggregation...

The Colorado Adoption Project.

This paper describes the Colorado Adoption Project (CAP), an ongoing genetically informative longitudinal study of behavioral development. We describe the features of the adoption design used in CAP, and discuss how this type of design uses data from both parent-offspring and related- versus unrelated-sibling comparisons to estimate the importance of genetic and shared environmental influences ...
